Why Every Woman Needs a Bra Fitting

According to common knowledge, which is often wrong, eight out of ten women are wearing the wrong bra size. We’re cramming breasts into cups that are too small or fooling ourselves into thinking that we’re really just a “small” B when we’d do better to own up to that A cup. After all, we’re all made in different shapes and sizes – it’s time to be proud of the size you actually are. Only you need to know what it is first.

There are bra fitting specialists in seemingly every lingerie store or section in the country. The next time you go to the store to buy a new bra, talk to the girl with the tape measure around her neck – she’s probably the fitting specialist. In the dressing room, that specialist will use the measuring tape to accurately find the size around your rib cage and the measure of your breast.

Then you’ll start trying on the new bras in the correct size, and the bra fitting specialist will help you determine if you’re actually wearing the bra correctly. A bra worn correctly will lift and hold the breasts comfortably without spillage and without cutting into your back. According to Oprah, who has featured bra fittings on her show a few times, having a correctly sized bra is “a beauty secret that literally performs miracles. It can reverse aging. It can make you look 10, even 20 pounds lighter.”

If you’re starting to worry about your own bra and the way it fits, you’re not alone. The average bra size in the United States (according to manufacturers) is a 36C. This is up from the 34B average we had just a few years ago. And there’s a possibility that the average may be even larger than that – it seems a lot of women squish D-sized breasts into a C bra, at least according to that bra experts that see this sort of thing on a day-to-day basis.
