You hear the word tossed around quite a bit, but what is liposuction, really? It is truly a fat sucker? Can it help you lose weight? Understanding liposuction is necessary not only to stay informed on some of the most impressive cosmetic surgeries today, but to also help decide what procedures are right for you.

What Is Liposuction, Really?

In the simplest terms possible, liposuction is a procedure that sucks fat out of certain areas of the body. Of course, in reality it’s much more complicated than that. The liposuction process involves prepping the targeted area of your body using lasers, fluids or even ultrasonic sound.

Then a cannula, which is a hollow tube, is inserted into the body multiple times after being attached to a vacuum. Loosened fat from the targeted area is sucked up through the cannula and into a canister. At the end of the surgery you can expect some swelling and bruising, but after a few weeks, the fat has been removed from an area reshaping the body and thinning out certain areas.

Liposuction and Weight Loss

There is a misconception that liposuction is good for weight loss. This isn’t the case. At most, a bout of liposuction might remove five to seven pounds of fat from a certain area. What makes the difference is that the fat removed is highly visible and once it is removed it’s unlikely to return in the same way.

This means you can expect thighs slimmed through liposuction to stay thin although the number on the scale won’t change very much. If you do gain weight back, it will likely take up residence in other parts of your body before returning to your former problem area as well. Liposuction won’t help you lose that last five or ten pounds if you’re looking at the scale every morning. What it will do is shave off that last inch of stubborn baby fat or the saddlebags on the sides of your legs giving you an entirely new look.
